The Peace Of Heart
Sukoon-e-Qalb is not just a word; whoever attains this peace of heart is truly successful. Otherwise, there are countless people in this world who are neither satisfied with their lives nor with themselves. Many take medicines just to experience a little peace and relief, even if only for a short time.
Allah Almighty has blessed us with such beautiful means for our inner peace, which many people take lightly the Qur’an, prayer (salah), fasting, remembrance of Allah (dhikr & adhkar), and zakat.
Allah says in the Qur’an:
Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.
Surah Ar-Ra’d: 28
If a person has nothing but possesses inner peace, he should always be grateful that Allah has at least granted him the blessing of Sukoon-e-Qalb. Such a person does not become anxious over what he does not have; rather, he remains content that Allah did not include him among the millions who are disabled, homeless, or orphaned. Even though they lack much, they still thank Allah, and this is what is called Sukoon-e-Qalb, the greatest blessing for which countless people take medicine every day.
If someone has nothing yet is content, happy, and grateful, then he is the owner of a great treasure. On the other hand, many people possess wealth, fame, and freedom, yet they are not content with life.
This raises a question: If a person has attained everything he desired, why is he still restless, unsatisfied, and compelled to take medication for peace?
There are many questions but only one answer:
The desire to accumulate more and more has distracted you.
Surah At-Takathur: 1
In chasing wealth, fame, and status, man not only forgets Allah but also forgets himself, what nourishes his soul, and what he should or shouldn’t do. He becomes busy beautifying his worldly life first and thinks religion can wait. Because of this, he starts seeing himself as a burden and chases worldly success, which gradually distances him from Allah, and distance from Allah is nothing but restlessness of the heart.
Allah Almighty says:
Beautified for people is the love of women, children, heaps of gold and silver, fine horses, livestock, and fertile land. These are the pleasures of worldly life, but with Allah is the best return (Jannah).
Say: Shall I inform you of what is better than all this? For those who fear Allah are gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, pure spouses, and the pleasure of Allah. And Allah sees His servants.
Surah Al-Imran: 14–15
If a person has nothing in this world but his heart is at peace, he should be grateful and patient over what he does not have. Perhaps his worship, piety, and connection with Allah will grant him more until he falls into prostration out of gratitude.
Allah says:
And soon your Lord will give you so much that you will be pleased.
Surah Ad-Duha: 5
Is it not like a great wealth that Allah grants someone peace of heart and teaches him to be content with life, including him among His grateful servants, while many, despite having everything, remain anxious and unsatisfied, needing pills just to sleep or breathe peacefully for a few hours?
Why is this so? Because humans want to conquer the world without bowing before Allah.
Allah says:
Is the one who walks fallen on his face more rightly guided, or the one who walks upright on a straight path?
Surah Al-Mulk: 22
We should constantly ask Allah for guidance and for peace of heart. For if the heart is at peace, a person remains content with life, and, instead of being distressed by trials, he shows gratitude, patience, and reliance upon Allah, and only then can he succeed.
Remember: Worldly success is not real success. The true success is the success of the Hereafter. If every Muslim firmly believes that worldly life is deception and the real life is the hereafter, then he will never deviate, and he will always ask Allah for the Hereafter more than the world so that he may attain true salvation.
May Allah grant all of us success in this world and the Hereafter, bless us with peace of heart, patience, and steadfastness, and make us among His grateful servants. Ameen.
