The Arrogance And Pride

The moon never takes pride in its glow, Nor does the sun feel arrogant for giving light to the moon, because both the sun and the moon know that their Creator is Allah. If Allah wills, He can take away the sun’s fire or the moon’s light.

Humans also know that the One who provides sustenance and elevates them to high ranks is the same Lord who created the sun and the moon. Yet, unlike the sun and moon, humans lack such understanding, And so, with even a little status, they start to feel pride and arrogance.

This reminds Me of the story of the two gardens mentioned in Surah Al-Kahf:

“And present to them the example of two men:

We granted to one of them two gardens of grapevines, Surrounded by palm trees, with crops growing between them.

Both gardens yielded their produce without fail,

And we caused a river to flow between them.

This man had abundant wealth, and he said to his companion while conversing, ‘I have more wealth than you, and my clan is mightier than yours.’

He entered his garden, wronging himself, and said, ‘I do not think this garden will ever perish,

Nor do I believe the Hour will ever come. Even if I am returned to my Lord, I am sure I will find something better than this.

His companion said to him during the conversation, ‘Do you disbelieve in the One who created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop,

And then fashioned you into a complete human being?

As for me, I believe that Allah is my Lord,

And I do not associate anyone with my Lord.

Why, when you entered your garden, did you not say, “MashaAllah, la quwwata illa billah” (Whatever Allah wills happens; there is no power except with Allah)?

Even if you see me with less wealth and fewer children than you, It may be that my Lord will grant me something better than your garden, And send upon your garden a calamity from the sky, turning it into a barren plain, Or its water may sink into the earth, so you can never retrieve it.’

And so, his wealth was encompassed by destruction.

In the morning, he was left wringing his hands over what he had spent on it,

As the garden lay fallen on its trellises, and he said, ‘Would that I had not associated anyone with my Lord!’”

Qur’an, 18:31-41

From this incident, we learn that no matter how wealthy or great a person becomes, they will always need Allah. And Allah, who created us, knows well how to break the pride and arrogance of a person, For He is fully aware of every act

tion and intention of His servants.
